Where Learning is Natural

After several years in a Montessori school, we found the private school tuition for two kids oppressive, and though we were grateful that the elements of Montessori were present, a traditional school (private or public) still has to act like a school.

When our oldest son, who did very well in school, said "I just do the school stuff to get through it", we took a hard look at what he was actually "learning" in school.   He learned to be quiet (and thus was often overlooked), he learned that you had to do stuff that didn't make any sense just to get through it, he learned that homework caused great tension and stress, he learned that he had to act like someone else and put up with a fair amount of mistreatment in order to be "in with the in crowd".

Our younger son did well too, mostly because he was terrified not to.   His anxiety about his "performance" (he's 5 for goodness sake), about the number of kids in his class (too much outside interference), and how kids are punished for their actions (so and so has to lie down all by himself outside of the group at rest time!!) made for a less than ideal environment for him.   Temperament plays a huge role in how children learn.  Traditional schools are not set up to deal with this.

It is our hope and belief that as our brilliant children learn and grow in a way that is natural and comfortable for them,  they will become more confident, creative and unafraid.

They will grow up knowing what moves them as indviduals, where their passions and strengths lie, and how to build on those passions and strengths to create a meaningful life for themselves.
